At #HealthXPh we have been discussing the impact of social media to healthcare in the Philippines. In this session of healthxph chat, we’d be focusing on social media and how it can improve health promotions and healthcare compliance. The possibility of using social media to shift focus on preventive rather than curative health will also be discussed.
Social media platforms like twitter has been used extensively in disaster preparedness and in rapid information dissemination of emergent public health concerns.
A study published explored how different motivation factors affect user behaviour through social media. Using a “healthcare compliance website with built in behaviour analysis” , the found that “people using social media for healthcare compliance may be motivated differently and act strategically during their social interactions”.
Healthcare professionals also took advantage of Facebook wider population penetration locally to advocate preventive health. Dr. Willie Ong, and his Dr. Willy Ong Health Tips Facebook page has been doing it successfully for years. Our very own Dr. Iris Isip Tan of Endocrine Witch, also explored blogging and facebook to engage patients on preventive health on diabetes and other endocrine disorders.
Engagement with Twitter was related to weight loss and participants mainly used Twitter to provide Information support to one another through status updates.
Wether these studies and experiences may be strategically incorporated to public health programs for preventive health, is the gists of this discussion. Join us on Nov 21, 2015, Saturday (PM Manila Time , as #healthXph tweet chat on social media and its role on preventive health.
T1. Is there a role for social media in preventive health?
T2. What are the best practices in implementing social media in preventive and health promotions.
T3. How should one evaluate the impact of social media on preventive health?
It was an exciting opportunity to talk about healthcare social media to our nurse colleagues during the Philippine Nurses Association Annual Convention held in Davao City last October 21, 2015 . I zeroed in on this- “Social Media: A Powerful Tool for Health Care and Its Ethical Implications and Responsibilities” in the 30 minutes I’m allocated. I don’t have permission (yet) to post my full speech here so, I’ll just summarise the important points for those colleagues who weren’t able to attend the convention. Basically, these points should be the foundation of your answer to the question “How should a nurse, act on social media platforms?”
Nurses are healthcare professionals. Professionalism is the basis of healthcare professional’s contract to the society. He or she is expected to act professionally, every time, everywhere, privately or publicly.
Nurses have the moral and legal obligation to yourselves, your profession, the patient and society to upheld your profession every time, everywhere, publicly and even privately.
Internet and social media are public, irregardless of your privacy settings. There’s really nothing private once it goes into the net.
Primacy of patient privacy and confidentiality is above anything else in the profession, even that of the healthcare professional itself. As a healthcare professional, we are legally and morally bound to protect this, every time, everywhere, even on social media.
Professional boundaries should always be maintained whenever, wherever, every time we engage our patients, and society in general.
The absence of social media policy for your healthcare institution does not mean it’s we can set aside “professionalism”. You should initiate steps to come up with your own policies regarding use of social media.
Social media can be a powerful tool for the nurses professional organisation- engagement, leadership and communication. Use it well to promote and achieve organizational goals.
Social media is a very good tool to promote social justice by promoting equal access and voice to healthcare. Use it wisely!
I agree these are not very easy points to ponder, much less follow. But who said being a nurse is easy? Kudos to all the superhuman nurses!

In the last Global Forum where the #HealthXPh had a session on “Reshaping Healthcare Through Social Media” the audience were keen on knowing the “metrics’ for social media success in healthcare.
The scientific community honed us to develop the habit of formulating research strategy and validation tools to measure outcomes. Social media despite being a relatively newcomer to healthcare, should not be an exception. There should be a way of measuring social media’s impact to healthcare or we lose valuable insights into how it played a role in shaping healthcare.
After the forum I realized majority of the scientist in healthcare (from the forum at least) acknowledge social media ‘s role in shaping healthcare. The big and challenging question now is, how?
After reading about social media metrics in healthcare, there’s two things I learned.
First, social media “success” is a result of a carefully planned and executed social media strategy. Second, there seem to be no clear agreement on how to go about”measuring” social media success. Thus, we ask our healthcare social media colleagues their insights into the metrics matrix for success in social media healthcare.
Join us this Saturday September 11, 2015 (PM Manila time as we discuss the metrics of healthcare social media
We’ve been saying healthcare should take advantage of social media tools to effect change. Healthcare needed some sort of a strategy complemented with a well thought out but practical implementation design. Or we’re just “riding the tides” of social media popularity and lose valuable healthcare insights.
T1: Do you have a social media strategy for your personal practice, healthcare institution or organization?
“Listening – or social media monitoring – involves searching for online conversations about your brand or industry using key words and phrases.” – radian6
Listening, monitoring and measuring are all part of an effective healthcare social media strategy. Social scientist have been developing methods to do this, like network analysis (SNA) and NodeXL.
T2: To which part of healthcare do you “tune in” your social media monitoring? Brand? The healthcare industry in general or your competition?
“Engagement is the Holy Grail of a listening and monitoring program. Engagement means gaining and holding the attention of consumers and prospects through regular healthcare-to-community interactions” – radian6
T3: To which healthcare stakeholder do you engage the most in social media? Patients? Colleagues? Institutions?Which do you think is most important?
As a conclusion, please comment on the validity of social media metrics in healthcare. Social media is reshaping healthcare. Knowing what or how to measure success (or failure) gives the healthcare stakeholders valuable tools to take charge of health.
Social media is pervasive, even in healthcare. As an early adopter, I witnessed how social media went mainstream as it integrates into our lives. I’ve also been a witness to the many challenges and opportunities social media presents as it slowly encroaches into the silos of our daily lives.
My struggle though is not always about social media integration or the technical skills needed to do so. I have have always been preoccupied on how social media could or should enhance my learning- to reflective thinking rather than just information, knowledge more than opinion and in healthcare, clinical and patient skills rather than textbook regurgitations.
In #HealthXPh, we’ve previously discussed why social media is of value to healthcare. We’ve tackled how social media is used as a tool to enhance education and build interactivity to our traditional learning styles. Social media has shown promise in areas collaborative learning using user generated materials while creating meaningful engagements in the healthcare sector.
There are stinging questions to the value social media in educating healthcare or would be healthcare professionals. Would incorporating social media in healthcare education really improve the knowledge, attitudes, values and skills, of future healthcare professionals?
There were studies that tries to understand the challenges and opportunities of incorporating healthcare social media in their medical curriculum. But the “infancy” of social media and the lack of rigorous controlled studies eludes a clear answer at this moment. The answer to these questions ( if ever it could be answered) may be found in the next generation of healthcare professionals.
In spite these issues, healthcare institutions abroad began incorporating healthcare social media in their learning curriculum. In the Philippines, social media healthcare is not in any medical or healthcare curriculum. Why? Why are current healthcare students taking social media seriously?
When asked, most nursing and medical students would answer, “I have no time for such”. If it’s not included in the curriculum we’re not going to spend time learning it. Surely if our medical educators didn’t include it in our curriculum, they probably didn’t find any value for it in our education” .
I’m not an expert in healthcare education, but I do understand the problems besetting an institution in training future healthcare professionals. Identifying what’s important to the KAVS learning of healthcare students is difficult enough, incorporating a complex, learning resource such as social media doesn’t make it easier, at least to most healthcare educators that I know. It would take a generation of physicians to find that out.
I have a balance of views regarding inclusion of social media in the healthcare curriculum. But, if we don’t bring the discussion now, we may never find out in the next generation of healthcare professionals.
Join us this Saturday August 8, 2015 9PM as we discuss the value of healthcare social media in medical education. Is it a distinction or just a distraction?
T1: Should healthcare social media be included in medical/healthcare curriculum? Why or why not?
T2: What are the challenges and opportunities in incorporating social media in our healthcare curriculum?
T3. How do you measure the impact of incorporating social media into the healthcare professional’s education?
As a closing thought (CT) please give an area in the education of future healthcare professionals, where social media has the most / least impact.
