About The Orthopedic Logbook
I started blogging in the late half of 2006, mostly “diaries” of my medical and hospital training. This “journal” gradually became analytical, as I foray into the atrocious practice of medicine. Having been obviously converted by a pro people UP educational system, and a pro poor, health care training institution such as PGH, I blurt out critiques on the various socio-economic factors affecting health care delivery system of this country. Akin to an orthopedic surgeon’s logbook, The Orthopedic Logbook records these issues, analyzing it from a perspective of a critical middle class physician and then expressing opinions and recommendations based on my personal experiences and subjective assessments.
I do not claim expertise on many medical issues and concerns, and I specially hate politics of bickering, but if nit picking health issues and problems promote awareness and critical appraisal of the issues at hand, I will blog about it passionately.
Thanks to Emergiblog, and The Medical Network Blog, and to Dr. Lei at Genetics and Public Health. They encourage medical/health bloggers to answer the following questions which is a modification of those recommended for web resources by The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. (Philippines don’t have one)
The purpose of the questions is to give the readers of medical/health related blogs the ability to evaluate what they are reading.
The responses for The Orthopedic Logbook are as follows:
1. Who runs this site?
The Orthopedic Logbook is run by Bone MD, a board certified orthopedic surgeon practicing in the South Mindanao area.
2. Who pays for the site?
None. It’s hosted on a free site. I initially used WordPress then migrated to Blogger.
I do most of the tweaking of the design (as far as a free blogger account would allow me to) and I have partial control over the content.
As of now, I receive renumeration from the ad links and actual contracts with specific companies advertising in my site.
If ever there will be ads on this site I have no financial interest in any of these companies, other than what they pay me to advertise on my site. As of this time, I have not received any gifts from any companies that advertise on the Orthopedic Logbook.
3. What is the purpose of the site?
I wanted to try blogging as a medium to discuss, share and learn from experiences /issues affecting medical practice in general and orthopedic practice in particular here in my area. I am not advertising as my readers’ MD nor Orthopedic Logbook stands as an alternate to readers’ personal physicians.
4. Where does the information come from?
Mostly from what I hear and read around- the news, journals, net and experiences of colleagues and superiors.
The majority of my posting is anecdotal.
All patients, staff and hospitals are either composites or have identifying information concealed or altered to allow for patient confidentiality.
Links to information’s sources are given whenever applicable
5. What is the basis of the information?
Please read my answer in question number four.
6. How is the information selected?
Postings are based on what I perceived as important to my learning and what might interest the readers.
7. How current is the information?
It will be current only depending on the sources and links given. Often, I do update some post to improve accuracy and factual information.
8. How does the site choose links to other sites?
My links are based solely on sites I have read and found interesting .
9. What information about you does the site collect, and why?
The site collects no information about anyone other than what is recorded on the site meters.
That information is used just for my own personal interest in seeing where my readers come from and keeping track of how much traffic this blog generates.
10. How does the site manage interactions with visitors?
Not like a patient- physician interaction I hope.
I will answer comments when necessary! I sometimes put up mock polls, for purposes of knowing what my readers think and results are not sold for monetary gains.
Spammers are blocked.
